>In contrast, β€œacceptable” is about gaining access to a limited set of rewards granted upon group membership. I cannot know exactly how often my presentation of acceptable has helped me but I have enough feedback to know it is not inconsequential. One manager at the apartment complex where I worked while in college told me, repeatedly, that she knew I was β€œOkay” because my little Nissan was clean. That I had worn a Jones of New York suit to the interview really sealed the deal. She could call the suit by name because she asked me about the label in the interview. Another hiring manager at my first professional job looked me up and down in the waiting room, cataloging my outfit, and later told me that she had decided I was too classy to be on the call center floor. I was hired as a trainer instead. The difference meant no shift work, greater prestige, better pay and a baseline salary for all my future employment.

I remember the Evo reviews in Top Gear.
"Amazing car", "better than the Impreza", "you'd be the biggest nerd to own one if you're a man, but if you're a girl, wooo!"...
Then in one of those reviews they mention the turbo that made that version the best only lasts 1500 miles.
Meaning you'll never use it if you want to keep affording the car.
Meaning it's the most uncool thing in the history of sports cars. Like an MG42 that is only capable of single fire.

>enshitification has finally hit the used market

Cars start falling apart at 100k miles now. I just sold my shitbox recently for this exact reason. 125k and 9 years old. Never abused it. Bought "muh reliable jap brand". Changed the oil, rotated the tires, did all the scheduled maintenance...

Didn't work. Something new was breaking on it every month. $200 for that. $1500 for this. And thats with me doing the work. If I paid someone else, these repairs would easily equal the cost of a nice new car. The trade in value was fucking nothing either. Not even worth fixing up to sell. I wouldn't have got my money back.

Shitboxes were the play back when repair parts didn't cost $2000 for a plastic radiator. Every car still on the road after 200k is some boomer fud that can fix cars but can't do math.

status mostly, and predatory lenders (surprised?)
people dont want to be perceived as poor like its fucking aids or something
so they get locked into car payments that are $500-700 a month and the interest is so high they will never be able to pay it off

A Toyota made part for a 10 year old Toyota will last. Once they stop making the part-- you are stuck with ONapaZone shit parts. If the part takes 4 hours of labor to replace and now only lasts 15k miles instead of 150k miles-- is it worth it? Times that part by every part you need replaced on your shitbox. If you have to drive through niggertown or get to work on time-- well, your fucked. Chink made parts have failure rates out of the box pushing 20%. A one in five chance that the "new" part never works from day one.

I have old shitboxes and reluctantly-- a newer car too. Another thing ivy league jews did to destroy our country and extort us.

It's just that the shitboxes of the future are likely going to be overcomplicated piles of shit that don't have the same integrity as say a 2005-2015 era vehicle and will be designed against consumer repairability.

You can prove this to yourself. Pay attention to whether people argue with you when you dress up vs accept your opinion. In my experience, when I am unbathed, dressed slovenly (comfortably) I am not taken serious. When I wear a suit, or even just a button up, I am. By the same people that saw me dressed as a slob the day before. Dress and presentation ARE WHO YOU ARE. It is not the version of yourself you have in your head. It's who everyone else sees.

Some may see this as hollow, but I would push back and say that saying the person you see yourself as being the real you is the real hollow perspective. Who gives a shit about the virtues you extol inside your meat helmet. What happens in the real world and what people see is the ONLY thing that matters.

I'm currently trying to build some experimental sacrificial anodes to put on the body but it's been tried many times with limited success so I'll need a more intuitive approach.

Honestly the rust is pretty good for its age, had to replace some brake lines but that's common on this truck. I'm about to have my first kid, part of the draw of this truck is it's the three-door variant so we can do the car seat and such no problem.

For most Americans driving a car is probably a necessity

But in SF even rich kids and people who own a car prefer to take the bus most of the time

I saw a video of Prince William riding a scooter and reflected that for the use case of conveniently moving around a country estate a scooter is probably the optimal means of doing so

And this is a man who has access to Harrier jumpjets and such

Dad had one of them. Years and years, miles and miles. Full of rust and the fuel pump started giving in, no uphill starts. Switxhed to a Ford bexause he likes those for some reason. The Ford well for a few years until an electrcal failure. Not even the dealer had an idea what went wrong, but did give some trade-in money.

Anyway the three-digit volvos are made to operate after the nuclear holocaust, look into wood gas. None of them had any trouble with the recent fuel fuckery. I still see Amazons and PVs relatively often.

That’s just not true. Cheapest new car is around 20k pretax and it’s small and dangerous to get in collisions in. For same 20k you get a respectable used mid level car that will break down about as often as the former, but is much more comfortable and safer.

Safety when driving the same road as soccer moms is most important. If I cared about saving money at all costs I would ride a motorbike(and die because some cunt didn’t look before merging)

When you are caught in the debt trap, you can never get enough cash together to buy anything. All you have is your future income. Once your cash flows have been eaten up by debt, you lose your capacity to save, and you lose your capacity to invest, which are the only ways you can stay afloat and get ahead, respectively.

The average person doesn't have $5000 for a used shitbox car and they can't wait a year to save for it. You need a car to get to work to make money in the first place. Faced with a year without a car to save for a shitbox (difficult if not impossible) and $500 payments on a NEW car, they take the payments. Auto manufacturers finance their own products and make sure almost anyone can qualify for the loan.

Everyone experiences this with real estate, but they still claim all debt traps are about being lazy and stupid. Nobody goes homeless while saving the down payment for a house which can take years if not decades. You have to pay rent which severely limits your capacity to save. This is the trap. And the harder people get squeezed, the further down this goes. From real estate to cars to cell phone to repairs for cars to paying for groceries with a credit card and so on.

Rich people's excess of money allows them to invest and make even more money. Poor people's lack of money forces them to take on debt which loses them even more money.

>Times that part by every part you need replaced on your shitbox.
New car mentality.
Cars made pre-2011 have very little parts that require replacing beyond friction parts and normal wear. So that 'ONapaZone' part will probably be a once every 5 year purchase maybe.
There is a period between 2012 and 2016 where manufacturers were transitioning to the modern "everything is a sensor" mindset and the cars have a combination of computerized sensors and traditional analogue that makes repairs a nightmare.
Modern cars are a nightmare because the parts are not sold to consumers and all of them have computerized sensors that inform engine behavior, so the slightest error can cause performance issues and increase the effect of problems or introduce more problems later.
It's a nightmare. Old school is the way to go if you aren't part of the "has a job + savings + good credit" portion of society so you can consistently qualify for, maintain and insure a new vehicle. The people I see struggle with vehicles the most are poor & middle class people who have a hard time saving for emergencies. They tend to drive older cars and fix them when they have the money.

I've drove shitboxes my entire life. Dad bought me a used mazda which I drove from 2013 - 2021. Ended up with like 230,000 miles on the OD. My schizophrenic uncle killed himself in 2021 so I flew out and drove his 1998 Ford ranger back to my location. He didn't drive much so it only had like 80,000 miles on it. Had that car for 2 years, then my grandfathers older brother died at 95 in 2023 and the wife couldn't drive and moved to a nursing home. Flew back home again and drove his 1999 Toyota avalon back to my location like 1,500 miles back. Sold the Ranger to a friend for like $2,000 because it was a lemon and probably cursed. Still driving the avalon to this day, I even put a 12" sub in it and a new speaker system myself. Just over 100,000 miles now. Thing is great, but dinged up because the geezer would bump into shit all the time. Don't really see a point in fixing minor cosmetic stuff, I keep it clean inside and out.

Had to pay for maintenance, gas and upkeep for all of the aforementioned, but I still got by just fine. Feel lucky to have been born into this, My grandparents have a car they rarely drive anymore so whenever they pass I'll just get that one lol.

It's like 4-5 small weird spots on the hood where the paint has fallen off and there's rust under. Like half a cm in diameter. Then the classic in the corner of one of the doors.
But the engine runs perfect still, some issues with the cooling system. Have changed thermostats and everything but it still complains about being too hot.
But all in all it's been real cheap to drive. Have had it since 2010. Aside from fuel, oil, washer fluid, and coolant, it has cost probably about 1000€ in maintenance.

Changing your car oil and filter is about as difficult and time consuming as changing out some deep fryer oil in your kitchen. I can't understand why anyone would even need to take a car in for this, it's almost at the level of needing a mechanic to refill your gas tank. $70 USD is ridiculous, you could do it yourself for half the price or even less if you buy oil/filters when they're on sale and store it away.

because many reasons, some are:

personal finance rates are less than the car loan and so you may take that money you would put in the car from the car (1-4%)
>why not from your stash?(5-14%)interest
because u can put it in a dividend stock in a tax sheltered account (16-19%) and save the difference

you may also only be able to claim a portion of the sale as a business expense, but can claim the lease payment entirely
you may want an electric car that is disposable
you may want to make someone else happy because its cheaper to pay the loan than a whore

theres more, depending on yourviews

My cars are 18 and 21 years old shitboxes.
Some chem FYIs,
You can remove rust using phosphoric acid. It converts it to Iron Phosphate, which you can simply paint over. It's what they put in "rust converters", but you can buy it for 1/10th the price. (use 10-20% solution, usually it's supplied about 80%).
Also, if you make up a solution of 100g of citric acid in 1l of water, neutralised by 63g of baking soda, you now have a sodium citrate solution which can be used to de-rust parts over night. They come out like new. It's close to neutral pH so doesn't cause any additional damage to the base metal. It only complexes the iron ions away from the surface. It's like Evaporust, but very cheap.

Gone are the days where people bought over engineered jap shitboxes in the 90's and 2000's for cheap just to sell 5-10 years later for even cheaper, creating the shitbox market.

So... To get rid of used brake fluid I take an empty gallon jug (usually an anti-freeze container for reasons I do not fully comprehend) and I fill it with the cheapest cat litter I can find. (The same cheap cat litter I use to clean up oil spills and such.) Then I pour the used brake fluid into the litter filled jug and I leave the top off for awhile. (Because some of the moisture evaporates.) Then, I cap it and put it in the regular trash can in the shop and pitch it into the landfill where it belongs.

It raises a more serious question about Western society in general and why it is so bad. It's entire nations filled with people who don't know what or how to do anything and their first instinct when faced with a problem is to call someone else, or pay someone else, or vote for someone else. The people make a nation and if the people are weak and pitiful and stupid and useless what does that say about the country? It's not just competency with cars which acts as a good litmus test, you've got people walking around who don't even know how to use simple appliances like an oven or washing machine, they get confused about very simple instructions, the rank close to the average of people. But I got rear ended and the car ended up getting totaled off of $6700 in repairs. The cheap cars are nice but its just 1 accident away from getting totaled. There wasn't that much damage. I bought a 2024 car that was a loaner vehicle for the dealership and had 7800 miles on it. The money I got from the insurance company was not enough to buy something decent. The turn signal knob on my old car stopped working because of plastic fatigue. While I was driving I suddenly wasnt able to use the turn signal. Not a good time. I like driving something newer and I have more money now so I like the heated leather seats and steering wheel. I dont know how to work on my own car and dont have the space to work on it. There's two ways to see it.
>Drive a different shitbox every year

The only wrong answer is to buy used cars that aren't shitboxes (i.e.: the 2019 model with 75 000 km).

Complete retard

New cars rust through within 8 years

Also never buy a new car, most of the problems show up within the first few years, and it looses most of its value the second you drive it off the lot

If you get a 15 year old car that's known to regularly make it to 300,000 and it's only at 100,000 then you have a safe bet.

>Drive a different shitbox every year
I've been driving mine since 2015 (made in 2007) because it just never dies and it's still going strong. Realistically if the engine is still in good shape all a shitbox needs is replacement of suspension parts to give it another decade or two of life. Run a couple cans of BG44K or similar PEA containing product through the gas tank to clean out the engine cylinders and injectors and it will be back to near new performance. For a shitbox parts are often surprisingly cheap given the high cost of everything else you would normally buy like groceries, bills, rent, etc..

The yearly repair costs are pretty much what you would pay with a brand new car once you take away resale value and apply your initial cost to the car's lifespan.

296k on my ,2006 Toyota tundra. Changed the front and rear suspension when I bought it. Done brakes all around, new radiator, u joints, oil changes. Never had a single issue with the motor since getting it at 160k.

I understand paying for a nice car when you make a lot as a salary man but there's freedom in not having any jew payment and knowing how to fix everything yourself.
