The dog shocking is bad, but what is worse is that he lied about it
Lying is one of the worst things a person can do, to others and to themselves, their reputation, their image, etc.
Now nothing Hasan says can be trusted at face value because the likelihood of there always existing a hidden motive, agenda, or coverup behind his actions has been revealed publicly to be very high.

Fair enough. We wouldn't. But now no one should. He broke the trust of people who trusted him in the past, at least the ones who don't see him as their cult leader.
Doing something evil is one thing, but lying about it once you've been caught is even worse. It makes you a coward. It makes you a sneak.
