Any other ex-preppers here? Why'd you stop prepping?

For myself, I just kinda stopped caring. At this point I figure I've got enough just-in-case stuff to get me through a couple weeks. After that, I'll just toss my weapons, silver, and toiletries in a bag, head out into the madness, and hope for the best.

I just stopped prepping after my bug-out bag got too heavy to lift. Now I touch grass.

I'm still sort of a prepper but once you have your gear and training squared away its not worth endlessly obsessing over things. A lot of these people are lacking something from their daily lives so are always reading up on the latest gear/gadget trend or other BS. I have friends who missed the boat on Bitcoin and even gold/silver because they were too busy stacking dried beans in 5 gallon buckets or building unprofitable chicken coops cause in the next two weeks society will be gone kek.

The prepping community is annoying too. A lot of people are delusional and think that one day they will just wake up and its going to be like Fallout 3 and you need to go scrounge through your local shopping mall with a G3 on your back.

For a community focussed on survival too there are a lot of out of shape fatasses in it so I cant really take most seriously.

I'm not sure if its still around but if any are interested in prepping its better to read and learn from people who actually had real world SHTF experiences like Ferfal's blog. Most prepper "experts" are like virgins trying to teach sex.

They put down money and work into expensive homesteads and thought I was crazy to focus more on having a minimal footprint here and getting my money out of Canada. Im a tradie and work service in residential homes. I recently went to a house where it was a line lady in her 80s and the husband was in his 90s and recently moved to an old folks home. Down in their basement was a cave that I went into and he had about a 4x8 room stuffed to the gills with ammo. Boxes and boxes of ammo, it had to have been worth a 100k or so. I always think of that guy when it comes to prepping. What’s more likely going to happen? You need a half a million rounds of ammunition or you are going to be 90 and shitting your pants at a retirement home.

You stopped prepping because of Covid when liberals, worldwide, where caught unprepared and made prepping the new normal. You were only into prepping-chic as a poser and never took the larger societal collapse philosophy behind it seriously. Prepping has never been bigger, largely thanks to Covid and Trump's economic mismanagement. The world is getting worse, liberals are getting more paranoid, and the average normie is increasingly aware that the power can just go out for weeks at a time with NO help. We won, and now you're not into it because it's not edgy or fringe anymore. It's normal to prep now.

Best example of this can be seen with Covid masks and masks in general. 3-4 years ago liberals suddenly couldn't get any, now they all want them backstocked with rubber gloves and medicine. But increasingly they're buying food buckets, water tablets, portable batteries too. It's the business philosophy behind Starlink as well.

I stopped prepping when I realized how easy it’ll be for me to raise. At my local gun club we have a ton of preppers who are all old boomer types. There’s nothing they love more than taking you to their house to show off their stash, run you through their security, and show you where their bug out places are. I’m just going to show up and take their stuff when the time comes. Way cheaper. Way easier.

Okay so basically just finished up your prepping and are now waiting for something to happen or not. There's nothing wrong with that you already prepped. I don't believe it's meant to be this thing where you're just always prepping more gear and shit though learning new skills are already useful even if nothing happens like my garden has gotten a lot better and I've learned a lot about it all from doing so. I'm going hunting next month and technically it is prepping related I think it's also just fun and then I'll venison for the next few months if I luck out. I have like 3 deer tags, 2 turkey tags, and then randomly a bear tag so I think we can bag something

Not saying. But its within a 3 hour drive to very popular resort locations.

No trouble with the law. I smile and say hola, they smile back. Sometimes they'll stop and talk for a while, practicing their English. I think they assume I'm a tourist so they treat me very good.

Other "law", I haven't had contact with as far as I know. I treat everyone with respect and am treated the same in return. I look broke as fuck too, always covered in dirt and dust and wearing torn up work clothes, so generally no one bothers with me.

Problem rises when people make it their entire identity and spend all of their money on the subject and basically hope for a collapse, so they can say "Told you so! I was right!
It quickly goes from prepping to a lifestyle larp. Just buy what you need and call it a day on the subject, then occasionally maintain things. That's how you should do it.

Prepping is pointless.
If shit gets bad enough that the government collapses then you will need a strong tribal group to survive, not a 5 year supply of beans.
If the government doesn't collapse then they will just take your shit at a certain point.
In the end it all comes down to a group of men with guns.

In a way normal life isn't really so different.

My prep is done. Almost 10 years of hiking I have completely refined my gear it is sitting there ready to go right now. My prep is based hiking and fishing/netting so I hike into the nearby mountains and set up nearby one of the many rivers, if the fish arent biting with the rod I have a gilnet, illegal to use but extremely effective. I even have a second pair of boots brand new.

Society is never going to collapse; that doesn't mean there are no emergencies. "Prepper" philosophy thinks that there will be a starter pistol and all of society will fail all at once, but in reality SHTF is a constant in pockets around the world. There are people who are trapped in war zones, in natural disasters, famine, disease, supply chain disruption, car accidents, financial destitution, political upheaval, the list goes on and on and on.

If you do not have food, water, shelter, thermoregulation, security, communications, transportation, and most of all PEOPLE to count on you are literally a drone. If you have no idea when your turn for desperate times is then why would you not have the ability to be self-reliant for a month or two? It's literally easy. I was never a "prepper" in fact I cringed the first time I heard someone call themselves that. But I did try to keep a months worth of food and stuff like flashlights, candles and stuff like that. I saw prepping as a scheme that started somewhere in the early 00s to sell people a bunch of overpriced shit they didn't need or probably ever use. I figured out a long time ago that if shit ever hit the fan all that stuff wouldn't most likely do you any good because you wouldn't be able to very easily take it with you or protect it and secondly I figured out that your chances of survival in a SHTF situation are dependent on your willingness to kill.

I slowly upgraded all my gear to camo for this specific area in the mountains too. At one time I was very into prepping but it was just an extension of hiking. I cant speak for the USA but if you are Australian we have no predators our population density is so low and kangaroo and fish are stupidly easy to catch. You can sit near a water source and watch the roos come, when they leave you remember the trail they left on and stretch a net across it the roo will just run straight in as it does every day and get tangled.

"Prepping" is kind of too broad because it really comes down to "for what?" There are so many variable scenarios that can happen. I think most people should have enough food and water and fuel for 2 weeks of no utilities but 2 months is probably best. More than that predicting gets difficult and what you "need" gets more and more far out. Few people can prepare for a total collapse and even fewer for something like a nuclear war or some weird cosmic shit.

Was into prepping way too early, I missed out on tons and tons of normie gains in the stock market, crypto etc because the collapse was only two weeks away.

I never expected they'd just print the fuck out of the dollar and hyper inflate as a way to avoid collapse.

Regardless yes it's not going to be fallout but the whole point is to be able to survive a few weeks if something big goes down, until the grid mostly gets back. Or be able to avoid getting knifed by some scooter riders.
