>Xi and Trump were set to have a meeting regarding some kind of trade deal
>Xi decides to put restrictions on rare-earths ahead of the meeting to remind Trump that China also has cards to play
>Trump responds with 100% tariff, but it won't go effect for another month (clearly signaling a desire for negotiations)
>Artificial temporary market panic (who profits from this the most? I wonder)
>The meeting will take place before Trump's deadline and both sides will drop their restrictions/tariffs
>Everything goes back to normal

China has the upper hand because they are the largest industrial power, but they are also a major consumer of US goods. China is actively encouraging domestic alternatives, but as it stands right now both the US and China are still very much economically intertwined.
