i'd like to think that most doctors go into medicine with the goal of helping and healing people, but it's easy to become disillusioned with the system and your patients. being in debt by half a million dollars doesn't put you in a position to challenge existing structures. while it is possible to eliminate the 'root cause of disease', this requires a great deal of patient compliance and adherence. i can prescribe statins, advise on diet, optimise blood glucose and blood pressure levels, help you to stop smoking and improve fitness, but all of this requires compliance. many patients are simply unwilling to make the necessary changes or even take their medication as prescribed. in such cases, it's just much easier to get them to come to the cath lab and have me dilate their clogged up arteries and insert a stent.
