A swing and a miss.
You all heard of the ACA? Not ringing any bells? How about Obama Care. Low cost government funded healthcare provided to millions of Americans regardless of their political beliefs. Many of the provisions of the ACA are set to expire Jan 1. That translates to roughly 22 million American citizens having to now double their payments if they want to continue to purchase healthcare. For themselves and their family. Here’s the thing, the money to extend these payments into 2026 was there. That was until the Big Batshit Crazy Bill came along and reappropriated that funding into the pockets of our wealthiest citizens. In the form of increased tax returns and to boost our military spending. That’s 22 million American citizens that will now have to pay the increased rates or go without insurance.
What’s this have to do with a shutdown? Well, the Democrats have been adamant about making sure the money is there for those people. Initially, the Republicans lied claiming that this money was to fund healthcare for illegal immigrants. That lie didnt pass muster so now they are promising to negotiate a budget only after the federal government has been funded. The Democrats have little reason to believe the Republicans will earnestly support the ACA once the budget is passed so they are blocking the reopening of the government until a budget including funding has been reached.
In a nutshell: Republicans don’t want to fund healthcare assistance for 22 million Americans. It’s bad optics for them to admit this truth so they counter with lies about funding illegal immigrants and false promises to negotiate a revised budget later.
