I tried harvesting acorns to eat. It was singularly the most disgusting food I can recall ever having eaten, and I do not hae a discerning pallet. I boiled the tannins of the things 3 or 4 times and it was still like eating sawdust that was both wet and dry. I added salt, spices, and ketchup; nothing helped. Between the effort required to gather, sort, and cook them, I can’t understand why anyone would make the effort if they weren’t on the brink of starvation.
I really wanted to like them, too, since I’ve got an easily available source of them, enjoy the shelling process, and like using the shells as both a fuel and a mulch. It just wasn’t worth it.

I wish we had some of these where I lived but between Asian grandparents and every guy under 35 being an outdoors enthusiast everything but the blackberries get picked clean. When I was a kid it was the opposite and tons of people would pick blackberries whereas none of them bothered with salmon and thimbleberries. I’ve never seen wild blueberry but we live in the main growing region so you can get a huge box for less than $20 during the peak of the season.
