I hold a similar position, but the early Bitcoin movement was a child of the 2008-9 financial crisis. As such, it carried certain political implications (left libertarian you could say) and P2P payments outside of the state and banks were part of that. Modern "crypto" has been entirely co-opted by these same institutions.

Part of the reason of this happening is that Bitcoin was tried and faile as a payment system due to high fees, low throughput, volatility. The technology keeps moving forward but so have banks and the state with digital wallets (and soon digital cash/CDBC's).

The most interesting coin is ZCash for the obvious privacy features, as well as some of the people behind it, but then the government could label it illegal and stop you from buying anything or even force App Stores to remove their wallet.

In the end it's all mental masturbation without a flesh-and-bones movement that would prevent the above from happening.
