they used all their money as collateral to borrow way more bitcoin than their money could have bought, hoping goes up a little which makes them lots of profit
but if bitcoin goes down a little then they lose all their money and potentially more leaving them in debt

let's say their fortune is $100,000, then they use that to borrow 10 bitcoin which is worth over $1,000,000
if bitcoin goes down 10% then that $1,000,000 is now worth $900,000 so they lose the $100,000 they used as collateral

once the value falls too low, or below the collateral invested, then the broker demands either more collateral (which the borrower doesn't have) or the broker simply sells and takes all the collateral

they don't have unlimited time to just wait and see, the broker is responsible in protecting the borrowed bitcoins and won't risk any more loss than the collateral provided
