It's just like any other trait that gets selected for via sexual selection. Some species select for bright feathers or for increased size, etc. It's not that they give a greater chance of survival, but rather one of many potential partner selection criteria that creates a feedback loop.

Though a lot less formal than a proper study, you can consider the stereotype that Asians do well academically compared to their peers. Yes, culture probably plays a large part with strict parenting, but I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility to think there may be a biological component as well.
