I was in Basic 21 years ago and that was a joke compared to 20 years prior. Basic today is a joke, every autist on here would breeze through it.
But none of you should go.
They are currently blocking all of us from retiring out of the Army and blocking those of us who wanted to get into the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve- 1 muster a year and nothing else).

If you join and get a contract for 4-6 years, they may block you from exiting after that and keep you in. Its not worth the squeeze if you cant depart after your obligation is over.

As a civilian it sounds like the Air Force is the way to go. Shortest and easiest basic training. A good portion of the jobs are desk jobs with direct civilian counterparts, and with tuition assistance your college would be paid for. And then after 4 years you are eligible for the GI Bill and VA home loan. Doesn't sound like a bad deal.

I'm not for compulsory service, but right out of high school all students should go through basic training. They could deploy if they wanted to, but basic training would be mandatory if you want to drive, vote, go to college, etc.

Served in the Marines because I wanted a real challenge and all the men in my family are Marines. It was alright, but honestly pretty easy. The hardest part of service was my own dumb decisions and depression when I hit the fleet. Overall, 7/10 experience, would do again, but more disciplined this time. Might've made it to MARSOC with a little more motivation.
