There was a study conducted by the Kremlin itself during the 80's that was meant to show the differences between East and West Berlin and their subsequent different approaches to the economy, and it was shown that West Berlin and their capitalist non-communist leaning was without a doubt what enabled West Berlin to not only maintain their development but it was shown that West Berlin was far more industrious and outdid East Berlin in every single metric. Even to this very day, East Berlin is considered to be less developed than other parts of Germany. This is especially striking because the people are literally the same and the only thing that took place under the period of time in which there was communism in East Berlin was the fact that during said period, the Eastern Berlin economy was considered to be a command economy, whereas West Berlin was almost entirely capitalist. The Eastern communist bloc and their influence over the German economy not only displayed the fact that central planning generally gives off worse results than a laissez faire capitalist economy, but it was especially evident to what extent the political approaches to managing a nation's economy despite there being no difference between the people in question, can and did have such wildly different results.
