webp is the image counterpart of webm, both developed by google. webm is fantastic and a straight upgrade to the gif/short video format, but webp is forced trash that is at best a sidegrade to existing formats and as such has no real reason to switch to it outside of it being forced.

I remember during the 2020 altrun the SEC had just passed regulations outlawing the use of ForExs. I had like $14,000ish in ADA stuck in USDC and logged into my account to take my funds off site and convert back to ADA because of the rule change.

Didn't use a VPN. Account immediately frozen, locked out. Couldn't get in for like two weeks. Ada went from like .08 to .53 in no time.

I knew the run was going to happen. I always felt like I got cheated by that stupid rule change. It prevented me from jumping back in in time to catch the run. I charted $3 as my exit point.

If that one little hiccup hadn't happened and I got to sell just before the top like I originally planned I'd have over $400,000 right now. That was supposed to be my passive income stream. Easily could have made $40,000 a year in passive off of that with certain staking APY's.

I'll never get over it. The US government is a horrible monstrosity. It does everything it can to prevent its own people from getting a leg up. So I get why these dudes kill themselves and meltdown. It sucks. Our generation does not have wealth. It's condensed into the hands of a bunch of geriatric child rapists.

Programmable computer use soon.
>what
Daily rations for computer use. Heavy gaming for 30 minutes, then the OS shuts off the game's process. Then a strict power saving mode forcing your CPU to be locked to 4 cores and the lowest frequency it can run at, to save the environment.
That way you can still watch 1 Netflix/Youtube/Twitch stream OR file taxes and do general office work.
OS will also recognise adblockers and disable them on the kernel level, with your local and online accounts getting flagged for adblock violations. Keep trying to block the ads and you'll be issued a fine by the copyright lawyers.
Don't like it? Then don't talk about it, because talk will flag you with national counter-terrorism units as a potential security threat. They'll survey you regularly to ensure your compliance and record any transgressions of Sustainable Development Goals and the limits gouvernment has set on you in their accordance.
>and what the fuck does that mean
That you wouldn't be able to get an extra cheeky piece of cheese off the record at your local cheese shop, and that you would be severely limited to 1 cheese slice as rationed per day.
No you won't get a block, you'll get a slice from the shop and no more. And if they give you more than you are allocated, they lose their entrepreneur license and lose their business as well as joining you on the terror watchlist.

I'm not advocating any of this satanic tyranny, anon.

Its just that much better than jpg and png for most things online, because when you want to deliver something fast and cheap over the internet it needs to be as small a file size as possible.

Its actually amazing the quality that webp brings considering its rediculous low file size.

Of course its annoying that many apps cant open it, but you can convert with ffmpeg easily.

Yes, but it also saves you time when loading websites like news sites etc.

>>518814320
I think its more a question of saving data, modern news sites are all hosted on AWS cloud slop that costs a fortune, everything costs a fortune, what used to be a server somewhere in HQ basement is now in CIA/AWS/Amazon infrastructure. Everything costs, HTTP cloudflare/cloudfront caching = $$$, EC2/ECS/lambdas = $$$, S3 storage for cropped images and originals = $$$, DB = $$$.

Everything just costs alot more after the jump to cloud hosting, but for some reason they dont really care, they like the scalability I guess.

I worked at a realtively large european news media until recently and the amount they spend on AWS alone was enough to buy new servers every month and they had like a team of people just maintaining their overengineered AWS setup. What could be done with one guy and a computer in the basement now needs a team of indians and a CIA glow nigger cloud.

I miss when shit was simple, I miss sloppy CMS written in PHP and I miss Varnish HTTP cache, I miss the DB server being on the blade next to the apache/nginx servers in the basement not some virtual machine owned by Bezos. Good times.

it's might just be the telemetry tracking in webp. it tracks which computers have and send/received the image

It's to keep normies from saving images like the old days of the internet. You can easily fix it with an extension tho
I use it and you can right click on an image and choose .png or .jpg with the "save as"

We had a couple threads on /pol/ recently about it
Yes, it's part of the overall enshittification of the internet and laziness aka 'cost saving' or "fast-cheap" for developers and website admins

Irrespective of the 4chan image upload protocols, it's an impediment at times to rapidly saving a particular image file but is also just as simple as copying the image and then saving it as .jpg / .png whatever

AVIF is great.
I can load a high resolution image at just a fraction the original size.
So instead of some 4MB JPEG of 3000x3000px, you get a 400KB at the same resolution and 85% of quality.
That means the user will see that image on screen ten times faster and smoother, than seeing some laggy huge JPEG.

i was told that there was networking code in webp a long time again, and before i could like into it it was being abandoned online until further notice.

I have never had Blue-Ray or HD TV, and I am missing nothing. I do not need to see an actor's pores on their face to enjoy a movie.

It's so your computer does the task of rendering the picture instead of the website on which it's located. That way, servers can leach on your computer power instead of doing the work they're supposed to do.

There's only one format I hate even more, and that avif.

Don't like webp? Force your browser to regurgitate the file type you actually fucking want. I run a half dozen different extensions explicitly to deal with random changes to browser functionality that piss me off. It's easier than ever to go around this kind of bullshit, you just need to put in the 15 seconds worth of effort to actually take advantage of the existing solutions.

You can copy WebP into Paint.net and save as a JPG.

WebP is a protection file type meant to be disallowed by uploaders, because there's been a legal battle happening for decades now, towards image search like Google's, for indexing images from websites of people without their consent, so to remedy this problem, if they're converted to WebP less users will download them and use on 4chan and other sites for nonconsentful memes or obscene purposes.

also that image format was infecting computoring machines not too long ago - it is security risk

if you are forced to download any of such images (you should really do it for all)
1. download them in designated folder
2. get image conversion software of your choice that can be called by scripts or that can do batch conversion
3. do it and then delete all webshit format files
