I can only speak for the Great Lakes region, buy by the time the Europeans arrived, the native population was already in the middle of an inescapable societal collapse. For a while, the only thing that kept the natives alive were the annual handouts (labeled as "gifts" in return for the natives prior "gift" of land).

Each year, every native male was provided with enough power and shot to handle a years worth of hunting, and their weapons were repaired. Every native (man woman and child) received a new set of cloths, and new blankets. In addition, the tribal leaders were given extra supplies for them to distribute as political favors.

When the europeans wanted to switch over to a cash payment each year; all of the tribal leaders wrote a letter saying no, because the men would blow the money, and the women and children would be starving before winter.

The British, always ready to screw with the Americans, insisted that the tribes show up in person near Windsor to get their annual handouts. In this way, Detroit, with a population of 2000, would face an annual overrunning by sometimes 15k natives, all amped up and waiting around for the handout process to begin.

I had ancestors on both sides of both conflicts. During the War of 1812 I have an ancestor who fought at the Thames under Richard Mentor Johnson and then several Canadian ancestors who lived at Niagara on the Lake and fought in the battle there. My Canadian ancestor was captured at Fort George and sent by the Americans to a prison in Connecticut and then his teenage son ran away from home and joined the militia force that accompanied the Indian chief John Norton. Being from Michigan myself I have a good many ancestors who came to the U.S. from Canada.

There was also a lot of mixing; especially with Vermont almost openly siding with the british during the war of 1812. A lot of formal loyalists from the American revolution had also moved north into Canada (it still being british)

Another interesting point in history was the so-called "patriot war"; where against the wishes of both the US and Canadian government, a bunch of people from both sides decided to get together and have an american-style revolution in canada.

On a side note, there is a LOT of new ground to be plowed with local/regional history. Now that the internet has digitized thousands of official records, it is now possible to go back and read the original sources used by the very first history books (which themselves became the main 'source' for everything after). Already I've found at least a few occasions of those early historians distorting known facts for their personal benefit, and the advent of those documents (and online news papers) give people the first real chance to go back and find the real history which wasn't included in the history books
