There is professional architect/engineering firms that build custom houses here and everyone is pro no jeets or migrant workers. If you have the usual 2 years tradeschool and are provincially certified to be hired as an apprentice meaning tax break for the architect firm then you're hired immediately assuming you do actually want to learn and aren't a dude weed fuckup because almost every apprentice turns out to be a goof with no standards who does drugs. Modern "wood" is barely wood. Housing uses pressure and heat treated wood that changes the chemical structure of the wood. Also OSB gets its strength from the resin, the wood is just there as a binder.
Really the only shitty part of modern housing is the drywall. But sometimes people swap the drywall for plywood (which will also be pressure treated and coated in resin).

Wood often has better strength and flexibility properties than concrete and brick.
