Strange thing, in the first few centuries of Christianity people were perfectly well are they were discussing and practising fundamental THEOLOGY, or they wouldn't have spent centuries debating the nature of the Trinity, and whether the Son of God was All a Man, or All a Spirit, or both. And it wasn't only the Big Wigs having these debates as if it was a secret inner doctrine kept away from the masses, it was everyone having these most profound discussions about the fundamental character of Subjectivity, including the man in the street and the man who cut your hair etc.
It is only in the last few centuries that people got stupid enough to think in terms of a 'story that isn't true'.
