There were sort of out of the stone age.
Mesoamericans were in what is generally called the Chalcolithic or Copper-Stone age.
Dumb bastards didn't really use metal for their arms or armor though, that shit was all rocks, wood, bone, hide and cloth, which is shit-tier even if macuahuitls look pretty neat and wearing jaguar skins is metal.

A similar concept of spiritual protection against bullets existed during the Ghost Dance movement among some Lakota people before the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890.
Followers of the Ghost Dance wore sacred Ghost Shirts, which they believed would make them impervious to U.S. Army bullets.
Tragically, this belief proved false at Wounded Knee, leading to a devastating massacre.

Based on the clothes and the image is probably assume these are maori natives on which case they would of used something worse than swords.

They would take hard woods and line it with shark teeth like it was a chainsaw. It was brutal as fuck and depending on the person your fighting and your ultimate goals, better than just a metal sword.

Yes most of the soldiers in the various Spanish garrisons in Philippines were Mexican'ts, especially early on. The Spaniards themselves who came there was usually for business purposes. But during the last couple centuries of colonial rule the Visayans had become pretty loyal to Spain and they used them to quell uprisings of the Moros or Tagalogs.

Yep correct they had extensive historical trade ties between the Philippines and the major states around south and east asia. A lot of the Moros there have Bornean or Sulawesi origins and were tied in with the Sultanates of southeast asia. Philippines wasn't isolated like the Americas or sub saharan Africa.

They had gunpowder weapons across the far east but you're stretching it a bit by saying they were the exact same as European technology. From my understanding the Europeans (and the Turks by virtue of contact with them) had much larger and more reliable cannonry during the late middle ages and early modern period of colonization.

Yet, if the Philippines was on the same technological level as Spain, how come the Spanish, mostly using fresh from the Copper Age Tlaxcalan soldiers from Mexico, conquered the Gunpowder Aged Philippines?
Is it because of divide and conquer? I heard that Spain used that Tactic against the Spanish Empire and used the tribes subjugated by the Aztecs and armies against their former Aztec masters. And I guess the Hindu and Animist Filipinos were also used in divide and conquer tactics against the Muslim Filipinos and their neighboring Sultanates.

Broadly speaking north american cultures had entered the copper age by the time the spanish reached them. In north america the working of native copper is widely documented and in south american cultures like the inca metallurgy had started to develop but it was locally dependent on the resources available so they didn't follow the same copper->arsenic/lead bronze trajectory found in the middle east

True, there were Cannons all the way to Southeast Asia due to nearby China inventing Gunpowder and Islam spreading the knowledge of Cannons to all Muslims (See Gunpowder Empires). However the West were moderately more advanced due to Venetian and Renaissance Italian modifications to the tech which was kept secret from Muslims.

>Is it because of divide and conquer?

Exactly. Although I've always found this expression to be pretty inaccurate for what actually happens because the divide part is completely unnecessary since it's already present. The Spanish took Cebu and the Visayan islands first through forming alliances with the Datus there. They used some colonial troops but mostly Visayan allies. They took Luzon after the middle islands and Mindanao and the outlying islands took a long time. When Spain fought the Muslims in Mindanao they always used Bisayan soldiers. Nowadays Mindanao is like 70% Bisayan but they all came there from the north in the last 200 or so years.

I disagree with the notion that Luzon was easier to take than Mindanao. In fact it just makes economic sense to take Luzon first than Mindanao as it was closer to China and had more profitable trade routes than Mindanao.

People from Luzon were more prominent across Southeast Asia vs people from Mindanao.

There were Luções (Luzones) colonies all across Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, East Timor, and Macau.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luzones

Whereas Mindanaoans only had colonies in Burma (Myanmar) at Mottama.

Actually according to Portuguesr Records and Thai Annals

The Thai King ennobled Filipino (Luzones) warriors who impressed him in Thailand's War against Myanmar.

From wiki...

>In Mainland Southeast Asia, Luzones aided the Burmese king in his invasion of Siam in 1547. At the same time, Luzones fought alongside the Siamese king and faced the same elephant army of the Burmese king in the defence of the Siamese capital at Ayuthaya.[26]

>Diogo do Couto wrote in, Décadas da Ásia (Lisbon, 1778) Vol. 5, pp. 95–100 (Década VIII, Livro II, cap. V) Siam (1547); this of them:

>Under their chief Balagtas, 300 Luções fought for the King of Siam against Burmese invaders—so effective that the Siamese granted them land.

>The fact that the Siamese ennobled the Luções by granting them royal land and that Luções military and trade activity reached as far as Sri Lanka in South Asia where Lungshanoid pottery made in Luzon were discovered in burials[27] is proof that the Luções formed a long range geographic network applying soft power among the many nations the Philippines traded and worked with.

>I disagree with the notion that Luzon was easier to take than Mindanao.

Yeah I didn't necessarily mean to imply that it was easier but it was much more prioritized because of where it is. Like you said, Mindanao just wasn't as important. They mostly fought the Muslims there to deal with the latent piracy problem.

Manila's and Tondo's sometimes Hindu and sometimes Muslim Luções were already Proto-Spanish by already supporting the similarly Iberian Portuguese in their wars against the local Southeast Asian Sultanates and Kingdoms.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luzones

>When the Portuguese arrived in Southeast Asia in the early 1500s, they witnessed the Luzones' active involvement in the political and economic affairs of those who sought to take control of the economically strategic highway of the Strait of Malacca.

>Fernão Lopes de Castanheda, in História do descobrimento e conquista da Índia (Lisbon, 1551) Vol. 1, pp. 201–205 (Livro V, cap. 34), Malacca garrison (1511–20s); wrote as such:

>Portuguese records show Lução soldiers in every garrison of Malaca, prized for their seamanship and ferocity in skirmishes with the Johor fleet.

>For instance, the former sultan of Malacca decided to retake his city from the Portuguese with a fleet of ships from Lusung in 1525.[22]

>And it was written in Gaspar Correia's, Lendas da Índia (Acad. das Ciências de Lisboa, 1858–64) Vol. 1, pp. 312–318 (Livro III, cap. LV) Malacca restoration (1526):

>When the Sultan of Malacca fled, he took refuge with a Luções chieftain; fifty Lução ships then returned him to power, fighting their way through Johor’s blockade.

>One famous Luzones was Regimo de Raja, who had been appointed by the Portuguese at Malacca as Temenggung (Jawi: تمڠݢوڠ [23]) or

>The Luzones had military and commercial interests mainly across Southeast Asia with some minor reach in East Asia and South Asia, so much so that the Portuguese soldier Joao de Barros considered the Luções who were militarily and commercially active across the region, "the most warlike and valiant of these parts."[28]

I researched most of those new entries myself and edited Wikipedia for it. There is a treasure trove of Precolonial records for the Philippines if you just know the foreign languages used in nearby countries, that predated the arrival of the Spanish. I was able to reconstruct the histories and cultures of several Precolonial Philippine Kingdoms all due to Portuguese and Chinese Records of Filipino Kingdoms existing before the advent of the Spanish.

The Spanish had hundreds of thousands of Native Allies against the Aztecs who hated their Aztec masters. In their eyes the Spaniards were liberators not colonizers. Thats why Tribes like the Yaqui and Tlaxcalans were ennobled by the Spanish. and even ended up here in the Philippines, for siding with them before the conquest of the Aztecs.

You're underestimating the logistical boon that metal tools represent, especially cast-metal tools made out of copper and its various alloys, where the only hinderance to incredibly fast mass-production is the relative scarcity of bronze-making additives like tin, bismuth, etc and copper itself.
Some shapes and tools in general are borderline impossible or pointless to make out of wood and stone, even stone as hard as obsidian, which will hold you back in other areas of industry.
Carpentry, for instance is wholly dependent on metalworking to advance. You can only go so far with adzes and chisels before you need proper saws, which you just aren't making out of stone.
These things all have a knock-on effect that completely kneecaps your technological development

That's actually pretty amazing bro. Are you a professional historian? I do genealogy as a hobby and feel kinda bad sometimes that I can't fill out the tree for my kid on her mom's side (filipina) because the records aren't online. I'm considering hiring someone one day there in Ph to do it for me.

Thai Anon is unaware of the irony that a Medieval Thai Kingdom (Kingdom of Langkasuka) imported their Cotton Clothes from a Kingdom in Luzon. Lol.

I was once a member of a Medieval Spanish Religious Order. Its Kino. I prayed in chapels built in the 1500s and learned Latin and Spanish using similarly legacy texts. Thats why I can understand some Portuguese from the Spanish I learned.

99% of Filipinos didn't inherit their names from paternal Iberian ancestors. The colonial administrators decided to standardize surnames in the 1800's for administrative purposes and they made a book of acceptable surnames for people to choose from. Most of the choices were Spanish names with a few Austronesian names here and there. Some families names pre-date that era but most don't.

Ok understood.

Ill just be here if you need anything. I can search Church and Government records for you due to my involvement here.

Also, about 5% of the Philippines is still Spanish-Filipino in descent and 2.33% are Mexican-Filipino.

For these, surnames may be more legitimate.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_settlement_in_the_Philippines

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Filipinos

However the 92% of the Philippines that has Spanish surnames but barely have any Spanish descent is due to the Narciso-Claveria Edict, distributing Spanish surnames to the surname less population.

Most non nobles didn't have any surnames hence the fake Spanish surnames. However, if you have a native surname, chances are, you are nobility, precolonial kings actually had surnames.

AKA Regimo Adiraja, Don Carlos Lakandula, and etc. :)
