Its more like Star Wars but for those that prefer a different setting. Even Harry Potter has a more nuanced understanding of good and evil than LOTR. Tolkien thinks purely in Marvel concepts - there is a very super duper bad guy that is just evil because he is and there are the forces of good that are great and noble no matter what.

That's practically my biggest complaint though here. Melkor is an evil meanie from the start and till his demise. He is given tons of chances to correct his ways, but he always reverts back to his evil things no matter what. And the only justification given for that is that he is arrogant and therefore envious. He is a cartoonish villain that is of course ripped straight out of the Bible, but that is not really an excuse here, since Lucifer serves a fundamentally different purpose. Melkor is just a villain because the story needs one. Same as orcs - they exist for the only purpose of being punching begs for the main characters of the story. Sort of like those clone troops in Star Wars.
