Palisades arsonist arrested
Jonathan Rinderknecht caused about a quarter trillion dollars worth of damage and killed at least a dozen people with a barbeque lighter that couldn't have costed more then like 20 dollars.

Why are these types of crimes so rare? There's tens of thousands of people who commit suicide every year in the USA and hundreds of thousands of homeless people. I'm not trying to encourage more violence or crime just curious why these types of stories are so rare

He got caught because he brought his phone with him.

the firefighters just didn't put his fire out completely and left the smoldering debris. Hit the houses a week later.

there's hundreds of those a year in OR and CA
I wouldn't call that "rare" especially considering the theoretically severe consequences

Because for some reason, you are equating people who are suicidally depressed with arsonists. They are distinct groups whose motivations are vastly different. One wants to end their own pain and suffering the other wants to cause destruction to others. Arsonists, especially high profile arsonists who manage to punch above their weight and cause significant damage, are actually fairly rare. Most top out at setting abandoned buildings on fire, and while they get a thrill out of it, they also recognize that what they are doing is illegal and could land them serious jail time if caught. They live in a self-inflicted world of paranoia and obsession.

Like think about it, if you were an arsonist would you want to get caught and spend your life in jail where you cant set any fires? No, so its always a tug of war between wanting to burn things and not wanting to burn so much that the police put serious effort into finding you.
