Superwood
https://www.cnn.com/science/superwood-10-times-stronger-than-steel-spc
What are the political implications of wood that is stronger and lighter than steel? Can it be sharpened? Can it be used to manufacture firearms? If so, metal detectors are about to become nigh useless. Will we see mass deforestation? A severe blow to the value of the steel industry? Is this going to change body armor? Vehicles? Infrastructure?
Imagine the pointy sticks you could make

Nah, just buy some wood glue and it's probably not abrasion-proof as it's wood, so you can stick on on and sand it down to fit. Might be a good material for doors, zogpolice think they've got an easy door to break in but it's superwood. also probably armour piercing arrows for when they break through.

they pressure wood after softening the cell walls i suppose, thus creating a more dense material. whether this really has better characteristics than steel is doubtful. if you read his comment on furniture, this man hasn't got the faintest.
>βPeople always complain that furniture breaks down over time, and thatβs often because it sags or breaks down at the joints, which are currently made of metal because wood isnβt strong enough,β said Lau. Superwood could be used to replace these parts, he said, as well as screws, nails and other metal fasteners.

>βSuperwoodβ has just launched as a commercial product, manufactured by InventWood, a company co-founded by material scientist Liangbing Hu.
>Over a decade ago, Hu set out on a quest to reinvent one of the oldest building materials known to humankind. While working at the University of Marylandβs Center for Materials Innovation, Hu, whoβs now a professor at Yale, found innovative ways to re-engineer wood. He even made it transparent by removing part of one of its key components, lignin, which gives wood its color and some of its strength.
>His real goal, however, was to make wood stronger, using cellulose, the main component of plant fiber and βthe most abundant biopolymer on the planet,β according to Hu.
>The breakthrough came in 2017, when Hu first strengthened regular wood by chemically treating it to enhance its natural cellulose, making it a better construction material.

The old cars were indeed more-easily repairable. Youβd just have to hose out the former occupants first.

The solid steel steering column and lack of seatbeat use/laws killed the most. Collapsing steering column or drive-by-wire systems, airbags, modern seatbelts, modern windshields, and old style bumpers make restored classic cars safer than your crumple zone bullshit.

The fuck is he talking about. Wood joinery is much stronger than metal hardware. The screws and fastners are the weak point.

journo articles like this are all the same
if you read the paper there's like one specific test they did where it was then 8.9 times as resilient to some freak impact nobody IRL cares about
meanwhile in reality whatever they do to the wood, it still fucking burns.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CglNRNrMFGM&t=3s
it's been around for a while, just suck the ligma out of it. basically humanity found out they can shape materials into forms on the micro levels to give it macro properties, turns out that isn't so easy or cheap at all, but here and there a paper emerges.
Just like this one. Yeah nice now try to build a plane with it. Or coat a building. Thought so lmao.
tl;dr: you'll never hear of that shite again

>Crumple zones are so cars dont survive accidents that they used to and to force people to buy new cars more frequently.
Force of an impact is divided over the timespan of said impact, if that crumplezone made it take 40ms instead of 5ms to transfer the energy of your 1,5 ton car hitting a wall at a 100km per hour, it has now made that impact 1/8th (40/5) of what it was if it didn't crumple. Old cars were like tanks, true, you could hose out the remains of the previous crew and replace it in a day.

>Incorrect. Steel can bench 1.5 its body weight, while superwood can bench 2.3 its body weight. An increase or decrease in body weight will not change this.
Achually, an ant can bench press more than a human given it's bodyweight, but scale it up to human size it loses to humans because it would die

exactly. he ruins the valuable properties of wood by squishing the cells flat with an insane amount of energy wasted on the process. i mean, the result could be useful for terrace planks or house fronts in wood. if impact resistance is key point. still, the cost involved is humbug.
