>COUNTER-TACTICS BY TYPE:
>DOWNPLAY - "So we agree it matters"
Their words: "Everyone knows this already"
Your move: "Great—then we can move to implementation. [Specific next step question]."
Why it works: Accepts their premise, strips it of minimizing power, forces forward motion. They either follow or repeat (exposing themselves).
>DISSENT - "Noted. [Continue]"
Their words: "Actually, your third sub-point contradicts..."
Your move: "I appreciate the close reading. For this conversation, we're focused on [main point]. [Direct question to room]."
Why it works: Acknowledge + boundary + immediate pivot. Their pedantry becomes visible as obstruction when you don't defend.
>DISTRACT - "Different topic. [Back to this one]"
Their words: "This reminds me of when..."
Your move: "That's a separate conversation. On [original topic], what's the next concrete step?"
Why it works: Label it, don't follow it, immediately pull focus back. Repetition makes them look desperate.
>DEFLECT - "Let's stay on you"
Their words: "Well what about YOUR..."
Your move: "We can discuss that separately. Right now we're addressing [specific thing]. Do you have a response to [specific question]?"
Why it works: Refuse the frame shift. Repeat the question. They either answer or refuse (both revealing).
>DERAIL - "I'll wait"
After multiple attempts: "[Name], I notice we keep getting redirected. I'm going to pause and let you work through what you need to say, then we'll return to [topic]."
Then actually stop talking. Let silence do the work.
Why it works: Names the pattern without accusation. Forces them to either fill awkward silence (revealing) or back down. Others see you're the reasonable one.
