The potential for abuse is extreme so clearly Republicans need to show them how short-sighted they are. CNN and many news outlets settled out of court with the Covington kid. That's as good a proof of lying on a massive platform leading to untold amounts of damage as you're gonna get. So why don't Republicans start handing out billion dollar fines to every tabloid rag that lied through its teeth about the Covington kids.

Only one kid got a settlement. Every other student there in his class deserves several billion for their pain as well.

it's surprising that he managed this, because the lawyers he used for trial are the reason he has such a big judgment against him. norm pattis is a big reason why the jury came back with over a billion. in texas, he cycled through a number of lawyers, and some of them were considering suing the previous ones.
there were multiple cases against alex and owen.
in some of those cases the lawyers simply didn't tell owen and alex they had depositions to go to.
in one of the cases they didn't submit anything for discovery at all.
but all this could have been intentional too. the thing people don't understand about default judgments is that rich people use them all the time - they just don't bother complying with anything and look at the final jury number as a fine.
