Perhaps additional evaporation off the canal in the middle of Australia would lead to cloud formation (and rain) but it wouldn't be enough to meaningfully transform the climate, it would remain very arid. Moreover, even if you could somehow create a source of continuous freshwater in the Outback, the soil is poor quality throughout most of it, and wouldn't support heavy agricultural use.

At best you could bulldoze millions of acres of grasslands around the Outback's perimeter and covert it to farmland, but you'd be destroying unique ecosystems that do not exist anywhere else on earth in the process. Those ecosystems are worth more to Australia, and the world, than additional space to grow staple crops. The US already produces more food than it can consume, sell, or even give away for free. A better plan: coastal nuclear-desal hubs pumping fresh water to high points ~50 km inland (safe from tsunamis), then feeding beaver-style slow-water networks—leaky weirs, BDAs(Beaver Dam Analogues), swales—that store water in soils and aquifers. You get year-round ecological baseflows, drought buffers, and targeted irrigation without evaporating half of it. One 1 GW plant can make ~200–300k m3/day, which is enough to revive multiple sub-catchments if you focus on managed aquifer recharge over big reservoirs. Political will > physics here.

A mega project that slowly expands across the landscape like a tree, rather than one main source, a true reclamation, rather than irrigation channels.

Here is my idea, we dam the damn grand canyon and create a lake that is 2000ft deep with a massive fucking reservoir of water. a dam with a pressure head of 1500ft will generate enough power for whatever industrial purposes we might need. the reservoir of water could be used to irrigate the surrounding desert and turn it green, maybe even forest it.
