It makes sense when you consider how easily and readily available land is. And how "relatively often" it's redeveloped because cities are still expanding outward. The city I live in has literally doubled in radius over the last 50 years. Lots of neighborhoods got paved over for other things.
The commuter nature of America also makes a cheap but big house very attractive. Especially when you consider that something like this comes with land. You can easily make a fantastic patio area, garden and pool, with lots of lawn left over. And all you have to deal with is a 20-30 minute drive to larger cities. It's why gas is such a big issue here and kept cheap.

In North Carolina even the shitty public housing the blacks have is brick, because there's a historic availability of cheap brickwork here. That’s OSB, I’d maybe use it to make a chicken house if I was putting felt over it, but I can get 9mm ply for £14 a sheet. 18mm OSB is about £20 a sheet and wouldn’t really have a benefit over the ply. If I was building a house out of ply I’d use 18mm WBP ply which is £40 a sheet, or hardwood which is £25 a sheet.
As I like having a real house that my great grandchildren could live in, I’d build it out of brick, block or stone.

Family home I grew up in is turning 30 years old in a couple years, still standing just as firmly as when it was built, will be standing for another 30 years after in all likelihood. Absent any natural disasters, there's no reason a typical suburban home would ever fall down. And for a finished house it'd have to be a pretty severe one. That home I grew up in has weathered several terrible winter storms which tore down whole sections of fencing, stripped half the shingles off the roofs of houses in the neighborhood (including a patch of our roof when I was in high school) and also survived one fairly large earthquake (for the region, anyway, it wouldn't really count as such in California or Japan where earthquakes are more common).

Short of a tornado or a tree falling on it, there's no reason my family home "built with cardboard" wouldn't be standing when I'm an old man. Euros ITT who don't know anything about construction or American homes just love to run their mouths while living in an apartment their whole life.

Houses built in this style last for many decades without onerous levels of maintenance. The housing boom of the 1970s saw cheap constructions flourish across the US and many of those cheaply built homes are still standing today in good repair. My younger brother just move into a house built in 1977 two years ago with the only real bit of maintenance required in the kitchen. The frame of the house, it's roof, it's foundations, were all solid. You truly have no clue what you're talking about.

Houses don't need to last forever, because your needs don't last forever. As your family grows you might need more space. As your tastes change you might want to move a wall or change the floor coverings. As technology changes you might need to run new services or have entire spaces dedicated to things which hadn't even been invented when your house was built.

Houses get renovated surprisingly often, and torn down once they no longer fulfil their requirements. A house which is cheap to build, maintain and demolish is a good thing. Especially when those same materials and techniques make it much more comfortable to live in during its intended lifespan.
My house was built in 1970 and it's already been through at least three major renovations. And in 30 years it will probably be demolished to make room for a new house with things that didn't exist when it was built, like insulation.

This. We like plywood and OSB because they have well known physical characteristics and you modify the home much easier than concrete. Also, geology in a lot of area prevent concrete home construction (settling). That being said, I definitely feel that plywood is the superior choice to OSB, but they both suck a dick if they get wet. Most of what I see now is FRP for exterior sheathing. It will be hilarious to see how well this holds up to long term moisture. Leave a piece of DensDeck outside and see what it looks like in a week. It's basically fiberglass reinforced drywall. The plywood versus OSB debate is like retards that think flat roofs are bad. I would rather have a 60mil fully adhered EPDM flat roof than any shit box asphalt shingle roof.
