It's basically true. My parents did not give a fuck in the 90s and early 2000s. My dad let me use any of his power tools unsupervised except for the skill saw. That he took all of the safeties off and I was like 8 years old. I could go wherever I could ride my bike to and there were no cellphones or anything. Grew up in the 80s riding three wheelers on our property w my brother & friends. We'd play "tag" where we'd throw sticks at each other while riding. I had an XR 80 dirt bike. I was 8 years old.

I grew up in the 2000s so I am on the other side of this, I never had that sort of "free-range" parenting, I was never allowed to go running off and doing things around town on my own. Hell, I wasn't even allowed to play in the front lawn most of the time, only the backyard where my parents could more easily see me.
Even if I were allowed to roam around town there was never much I could have done anyways. I grew up in a suburb with not much else around and it wasn't walkable at all, every direction just had roads with cars going 60 MPH. And none of the neighbors were my age also, they were all almost exclusively boomers and old retired people.

Just turned 20, 5 years ago I was smack dab in the middle of my teens during covid and our county school system had our distance learning classes parsed down 4 hours per day from 8 am til noon. So I spent most my afternoon after class hiking, fishing, riding my 4 wheeler, fucking around outside with my girlfriend and lil sister. We live on a dirt road way back in Appalachia mountains so no one gives a fuck and every one regardless of age runs the backroads year round except for rainy or snowy days. Graduated during the covid shutdown and we had a remote "virtual" graduation ceremony for anyone who wanted to get online and sit in front of your computer for an hour. I had to cause my mom, gramma and girlfriend all continuously bitched at me til I agreed to. There was a small forest nearby and we would build shitty forts and have "wars" and shit. Sometimes we'd go to the local YMCA and swim in the pool. We'd also beg our moms for spare change to go to the local Blockbuster and rent a game. The only rule was to be back before dark, we didn't cause trouble and nobody gave a flying fuck. During the winter we would build snow forts or go sledding down a nearby hill.

Yea I was born in 1981. The older I got the more freedom I seemed to have. But I could run around in the yard and in the field behind my house when I was little. I had to ask to go to a friends house. I could also ride my bike around the block.
As I got into middle school I was riding my bike on dirt trails far into the woods.
I could disappear for hours my parents not knowing where I was.
I usually told them where I'd been when I got home. By that point I might visit a friends house nearby or do anything I wanted around there without informing my folks.

I came from a place that saw some of the worst fighting in ww2. When I was a child still living there my grandpa would take me out into the woods or ruins and we'd collect ww2 relics or just explore. When I came here still as a child 30+ years ago I spent years just walking around the neighborhood collecting bits of glass, metal, icicles in the winter. I made a lot of friends doing it. Over time many of them started joining me. We would all play outside without any toys just pure imagination, even the girls. We would play-fight and wrestle ... even the girls. Then came the PlayStation and everything changed .......

I consider myself lucky I got to have this kind of dual childhood of being a traditional dirty kid and then got to ~transition~ into a video-game-playing retard like everyone else. All the kids growing up right now or before who didn't spend their entire childhood outside have been robbed massively of something very important and magical. Not all the toys and electronics in the world can compare to walking around in a poor neighborhood through the back alleys with a wagon picking up bits of garbage and talking about nothing and making jokes with your boys and girls while you're doing it.

It’s true. I grew up in the 80s/90s and would get on my bike and go as far as it could take me as long as I got home by dinner time. At 13, I would ride to a 7-11 5 miles from my house, stand outside with a couple bucks in my hand, and ask random people walking in to buy me smokes. Never took longer than 30 mins to score a pack. Then me and my friends would ride to our spot in the woods, smoke, fuck around, light shit on fire, etc. Life was great back then. Kids these days never leave the house and are so deprived. They have no idea what they are missing out on.

growing up in the 90s, me and my brothers, aged 5 to 11 at our youngest if I remember right, would stay unattended all day while my parents worked
we each had our own set of house keys and we would walk to and from school alone. we would sometime go out to ride our bikes, but we mostly just stayed in playing video games
I suppose eventually my older brother was old enough to be responsible for us, but then he also started going out with his friends and left us alone anyway

I always thought it had more to do with videogames and computers. We did roam around in the 90s, and when we got home, we'd play N64. With Xbox 360, we had a lot more hanging out at eachothers' houses (but not outside) and then there was Xbox Live to play online. PC gaming, we could play BF2 from home.

We used to be able to go out at night on weekends too, until like 10:00 p.m. or 11:00 p.m. .
