Schicklgruber (Hitler's original family name which is in question) means well-digger, it's a name based on one's ancestors occupation. Gruber is a very common Austrian surname. Schickl is an old Austro-Bavarian localism for well, and so is Hiedl. So Hitler's grandfather changed the family name to Hiedler (same meaning; well-digger) and his father and the authorities changed the spelling to Hitler. The etymology nothing to do with "Shekelgrabber" and more with digging, pioneering and building, which is also fitting given that Adolf had a talent for architecture.
