As a GenXer, let me tell you how the '70s were with KISS. They were like Beatles for GenX. Huge at the time.

You'd go with your mom to the grocery store, head to the magazine rack, and check out the rags with KISS to see if you could see them without makeup. There would always be a tease of them covering their faces or something.

Kids traded their albums at school, trading cards, Halloween outfits, all kinds of fun stuff. Everybody argued about their favorite member, Ace was frequently the favorite.

Kids wanted KISS stuff for Christmas. I got one of those plastic KISS guitars, loved it.

But I can see why people would think like you. I am not a huge fan of the band either but I do like several of the songs and am even listening to some of their music right now (Destroyer album). Their songs are simple and can be repetitive with the lyrics but I think that was a part of the appeal for many. Made their music far more memorable and catchy. Plus the face paint without a doubt was a huge appeal.
