I'm 38 and still have no career.

Not to say that I haven't had a job; I've had my fair share of wage slave jobs, but something I can build a family from? Not for my entire life.

And for that reason I'm ready and willing to burn the entire country down. If there's a zoomer revolt, I'll join them in it, and I think many other millenials and even some gen x and boomers will as well. The entire rotten piece of shit system needs to be torn down and the people who created and perpetuated it imprisoned, deported, or worse.

My experience growing up in a nice White town in the upper Midwest was quite similar. Life was ok, then a big international slaughterhouse built an operation in town. I assumed that of all the disciplines, classical music would be one of the slowest art forms to "change" like everything else in college had, and it's a career where I could truly rely on myself and myself only.

Imagine my shock when they told me I had to sign up for a DEI class for an instrumental performance degree. A fucking DEI class as required curriculum to learn Western classical music. As in, I would play a piece by Georg Frideric Haendel and in the next hour be listening to some nigger lecture me on privilege.

Then, COVID hit the year after I dropped out and everyone was playing wind instruments with masks on, and doing rehearsals over Zoom. Fucking glad I got out of there.

I tried starting a career twice. I got into the tech industry in my late 20s, I worked for a little over 3 years at a decent job, gaining experience, and then covid hit and my company laid off 1/3 of its exmployees (we are a contracting company, and most of our contracts were cancelled in April of 2020 due to covid scares, leaving a majority of the programmers with no projects to bill to, me included).

So I was without a job for a while. Lots of programmers like me got laid off, and the competition to get junior positions was very fierce. I tried learning new technologies and making myself more marketable with some side projects, but it seems like the list of requirements for every entry level job just grew longer and longer. I frequently got to the last round of interviews only to be told they were going with another candidate who had a lot more years of experience. I asked why a guy with 10 years experience was applying for a junior position, and they said "most of our applicants have years of experience now" and I realized that's just the labor market for tech.

I got super lucky in 2022, a friend connection got me a job in a laboratory testing software and hardware. It was a low paying job, but there was room to move up into higher paying positions. It was a viable career path, if one less flashy than being a developer. I was there not even 3 months when the huge layoffs hit the entire tech industry in Q4 of 2022. They didn't just lay me off, they didn't just layoff my whole team, they laid off the entire lab, everybody who worked there was given 2 weeks notice.

And that was that. I haven't tried to get back into tech, or any sort of career, since then. I work retail now. It sucks, it's a living hell, but it's the only job I could find that would hire me immediately without multiple rounds of interviews only to inform me that "actually we want somebody with 5+ years experience".

I am in my 30s, I can't learn a trade now, so I'm stuck working in retail hell.

It's an early morning stocking position, so I don't have to deal with customers unless I pick up extra hours to work while the store is open. The schedule is ass, makes it hard for me to socialize with anyone because I have to go to bed in the early evening, plus the company are absolute faggots about giving you time off around holidays when my family expects to spend time together. I hate it mostly for that. I miss having a job where nobody really did anything in December because nobody wanted to spend Christmas eve fixing a major problem. Maybe we'd do one last patch before the end of the year, but it would be only a very, very safe patch for bug fixes. No major pull requests in December was the golden rule.
