It was about other things too, but slavery was the big one.
The north wanted to abolish slavery for humanitarian reasons. At this point, slavery had already been banned in most of the world. The south's dependence on Slavery was seen as disgusting and outdated, and the culture was shifting against them.
But the south *couldnt* get rid of slavery. It wasn't a matter of them being mean evil bad men, their economy literally didn't function without it. There had never been a point in history where the south *wasn't* built on slavery. The north had industry and factories and cities, the south mostly did not. The removal of slavery would have destroyed the south in ways they didn't know how to fix.

People don't secede from the union over trivial bullshit, the stakes have to be high. And when it came to slavery, for the south the stakes couldn't be higher. Nothing else that anyone mentions about the south is anywhere near as critical to them as slavery was, because ending slavery was an *existential threat* to the south and all of that other bullshit was not. Which isn't to say that those other factors didn't exist or contribute, but pretending that the civil war could have ever happened without the issue of slavery at the center of the map is foolish. The consequences of ending slavery for the south are the only thing major enough to force them into the conflict.

So its not unfair to say that the civil war was about slavery, even if its reductive.
