AI is the future
Just when you thought AI couldn’t make our lives any better than they already are, just this week DoorDash announced ChatGPT will now be able to order you food, Walmart will implement purchasing in chat, and now this - Starbucks is implementing AI to improve your barista’s skills and enhance your coffee experience. We are literally living in the future thanks to AI.

The trough of disillusionment is going to wallop all of you. 99% of the top-tier AI content which has you all clutching your pearls is not AI, it's experts in that domain using AI as a first drafting, and then putting in the hours to rearrange it all, find the problems.

The part where AGSI is amazing everyone, boils down to a lookup table, a hash map, and lstm layer interconnected recurrent neural networks trained to transform what you've got to what you have.

You notice where the AGSI shines is when you stay on the beaten trail, as soon as you get out into the weeds, it just makes stuff up and hallucinates it back to sound not wrong. It's turd polishing.

There is no imminent threat. Or if it is, it's still 15 years away. Turing test got it wrong, words seem like god magic, but really it's just glorified barking.

The first mammal joint strike fighting targetting acquisition system, since you need 15 males to take down and bring home the big dinner.

How is a machine that learns from and adapts to the stimuli it receives any different than the human consciousness? We learn, we adapt, and only to that which we receive.

it doesn't learn for longer than a few prompts, it's nowhere near comparable to the human consciousness. what you say is "learning like a human" is what is actually called fine-tuning or in-context learning at best, which gets forgotten even a few messages afterwards before it starts hallucinating or reversing back to the base model.

The current batch of LLM's DO NOT learn like humans, in that they do not retain factual datapoints, but instead retain only context weighted probabilities. LLM's have got something like a slice of our associative memory system and language processing, but they're not close to a full brain on their own.

This is arguably the most important thing immediately. Stable Diffusion seriously lowers the bar to entry for people to start making decent visual media. It's a memeing shitposter's dream come true. The effects on culture will be massive.

> it has applications in healthcare which is of vital importance
stuff like this is the most important long term, though. And it's also an area AI shines, like other anons mentioned, even before current attempts at general AI. I recall reading that an AI that made diagnosis off X-Rays got shut down because it ended up being so good at it, that it started to be able to accurately identify ethnicity just by looking at rib structures in ways humans couldn't and it spooked the researchers because "muh bias", as if rib genetics is bias.

This. Current AI tech's only real innovation is that they've managed to crack the problem of interpreting context thanks to the Transformer algorithm. This has enabled the current deluge of generative AI systems, and it's a huge step towards eventual true AGI. But it's not there yet, as there are lots of other pieces missing.

>and it's a huge step towards eventual true AGI

The general academic consensus seems to be that transformer models are a dead end when it comes to AGI, and it looks like they're hitting scalability limits already. If we ever get AGI, it's probably going to need to be given a body with which to interact with the real world, rather than just being brute force pumped full of training data.
