Why does literally everything about this state feel so wrong? I'm out in Alamogordo right now, and it's a very obvious "something isn't right, like really not right here".

I saw gene kranz at the NMSU assembly hall there in alamogordo when he was inducted together international space hall of fame or whatever. I got to meet Gene and Jack Harrison and have dinner with a few other astronauts. It was awesome. My girlfriend at the time was stationed at holloman airforce base so I lived in town. It was a desolate, run down falloutesque town that indeed looked straight out of breaking bad. One of the breaking bad extras lived in my apartment complex, I dont know what happened to him buy obviously he didnt make a ton of money off that episode. He was a big Mexican guy that got killed in one of the episodes. Anyways, that place sucked but I enjoyed it for what it was. White sands is nice. I had a free pass being military and all so I could just go whenever I wanted. Too many Mexicans.

I live in northern NM. Espanola for 4 years now. I work at LANL.
Espanola has recently declared a state of emergency because of crime and drugs. The national guard will be deployed here within the next few weeks. My neighborhood was a bit rough when I first moved in, but now its gotten way worse. Im always having to chase homeless bums off my property. I helped a neighbor clean a vacant lot a block away from my house and we found a bunch of burned foil and stolen copper cables.
I know the drug problem is really just a drug trade problem. If somehow we could stop the drugs at the border, im sure this city would be a better place.

It's a weird place, that's for sure. I cannot comment to any supernatural or "woo" factors as I've never spent any significant time there, just drove through it a couple times and stopped at a few little nothing towns to piss/grab taco bell/stretch before hitting the road once more, but it is eerie there. It feels like people *shouldn't* live there. Like it's gotta be near the bottom of the barrel when it comes to places to live in the US. It's way beyond desolate (and I like deserts, I grew up in the sonora in AZ). Like a wile e. coyote cartoon but with shitty meth-house looking trailers dotting the terrain. And holy shit the winds blowing across the desert! It's astoundingly windy. Who lives in these tiny towns (besides the vagrant mexicans and natives)? These tiny towns didn't seem to have any industries, just service businesses. The only locals I even saw on my stops (besides bums) were the people working the gas stations and slop joints, everyone else's cars had out of state plates/luggage carriers and they were clearly transiting through, like I was. How does the economics of such places even work? My last time through there was probably close to 20 years ago, but what struck me was that every place I stopped felt like being on the rez. The REAL rez, not the touristy parts: no whites anywhere, but every place you stop is staffed by short rotund brown women and you will almost certainly get asked if you have change/smokes by an inebriated brown vagrant anywhere you stop.

My old lady likes to watch those body-cam videos of police incidents on youtube and I don't pay any active attention to it when she's watching, but every once in a while a video will catch my eye and I'll ask her; "is this in NM?" 100% of the times this has happened she said "Yes." The place has a distinct look: The cops all look like rez police (natives), the subjects in the video are either mestizo or natives and usually visibly drunk/tweaking, and they're at a trailer or derelict wreck of a "house" in a desert setting with a bunch of dogs wandering around.

My understanding is it's far better to live in Ruidoso and visit cloudcroft rather than visit. I've heard a ton of stories about massive difficulty NOT getting dropped by insurance for the fire risk. Apparently the biggest, busiest, most profitable BBQ restaurant is desperate to leave just because of their insurance premiums. Ruidoso has several fire departments, cloudcroft only has one, and they're more isolated and have more difficulty putting out fires.

I drove through from West Texas. There was one area near the border where there was virtually nothing as far as the eye could see. No trees bushes windmills buildings fences road signs, just short grass. Like being in the middle of the ocean. Will never forget that.
Northwestern NM was beautiful though. Like alarmingly so.
Vines in Roswell were indeed weird. I just got drunk at my hotel room.
In a way it's a cool place. I can see the appeal. Good place to hide.
