first a duplex has two distinct addresses in one building, usually built symmetrically. The cops should've gone to the other apartment in the building. Aiyana and her grandmother didn't live with the criminal in question, just in the same building. Also the cop himself lied on his reports to try and blame the innocent grandmother for his negligence.
