It was actually pretty wealthy. They wanted to continue living there but because they lacked any city planning and maintenance became unfeesable. In the end it didn't matter how much money they could throw at the problem with infrastructure the foundations were too far gone to continue living there. Thats the real reason it was shut down. They couldn't turn it into luxury apartments and the government outside of the "city" wasn't going to let them tear it down and build it back up with proper architecture. The only reason it existed was to get by local laws by squatting on an old British fort, and once they tore it down the government wasn't interested in honoring "British sovereignty" of a long since abandoned fort.

Several aspects of what you described, actually. Kowloon contained a teeming microcosm of human beings and it functioned despite being an absolute degenerate clusterfuck. It was the most crude and dysfunctional example of a proto-arcology anyone could have ever asked for. It's a shame it was destroyed without anyone taking the time to research how it formed layer by layer like a tumor on an old fort.

I guess so, but how could you ever hope to treat such a condition without intensive study of those afflicted? Same with Kowloon. Think of it this way: These people were absolutely dirt poor. They functioned in a socioeconomic niche at the very bottom rung of society with minimal financial input. It's a wonder the damn thing didn't collapse in on itself. How and why did it even endure long enough to be deconstructed? Unanswered questions.

I think it was a cool and unique place dripping with atmosphere, but at the same time I recognize why they had to get rid of it. It was a giant fire and accident hazard. Maybe there was some way to preserve it and make it into a tourist attraction, but it seems like too much of a challenge in logistics.
