If you want to rehabilitate some dumb 19 year old who got caught up with gangs, you first demonstrate the gangs are not in control, if you do not then everything you do after is meaningless. Who's supposed to pay for all this shit and what's the return on their investment? If taxes, i.e. society pays for it, are people exempt from paying when they can't afford to provide a high quality of life for themselves and their own family? The reason criminals commit crime is because they don't care for their victims. They're deeply antisocial, and sometimes its genetic or due to past experiences. The point is, they are unreasonable and will do and say anything to wiggle out of a sentence.

This is a liberal misunderstanding of the theory of mind of the criminal. They somehow believe that they are as reasonable as any other normal person. A normal person doesn't commit crime. Even normal poor people don't commit crimes, it's always minority of unreasonable people. Why don't they get this?

Restorative justice is an idea where the victims and the perpetrators just sit around discussing what happened and becoming friends along the way

As an example

Tyrone killed my wife and son in a home invasion robbery.
Along with a programs to mentor Tyrone into becoming a productive member of society, Tyrone comes to my house every Saturday to mow my lawn and afterwards I make him an ice tea and we talk for an hour about how his crime has impacted me. : )

i tried explaining to a woman how "all criminals are mentally ill" because you would have to be mentally ill to take actions that have such bad risk/reward ratios over and over again. if your brain ever decides "committing this petty crime is the best solution to my problems" - then your brain isnt working properly and you are mentally ill. you're either a psycopath/sociopath or have low impulse control/emoitional issues/no forward thinking/poor understanding of cause-effect/etc/etc. all mental illnesses.
