Why do you think a ceasefire would solve anything for Russia? Even if Putin conceded on every point and agreed to restore the 1991 borders, Ukraine would just take the next step and demand a bazillion dollars in reparations or whatever. Because this war is not really about Ukraine or some patches of territory. Ukraine is ruled by American vassals and Ukraine will continue the long range strikes until Russia agrees to switch sides and join the US against China.

A more likely outcome is that Putin eventually reaches the conclusion that he'd be better off by directly retaliating against the countries that provide Ukraine with the munitions, parts, money and intel for the long range strikes. Of course, such a step is not to be taken lightly; it will be seized on by western politicians as a "Pearl Harbor" "unprovoked" attack, so that they may distract from their in many cases very difficult domestic political situations. It's a situation that could easily spiral out of control. Washington is essentially engaging in a risky game of brinkmanship, because they are out of other ideas on how to break up the anti-US coalition.
