Its probably a miscarriage. That would be the most common reason for a married couple to be doing this. If they shared the ultrasound photo with their children its unlikely this is an intentional abortion.

Its psychologically easier for the parents to rationalize it as not being the loss of a child. I think the daughter is right, this is the loss of a child and the child should be memorialized; but I understand why the woman doesn't want to deal with the grief.

I have had a couple of miscarriages and the first one I was sad but it’s just a clump of cells before weeks 10, there is no discernible baby on the ultrasound or heartbeat. Saw my daughter at about 10 or 11 weeks... her little feet were like they were trying to peddle a bicycle. Just going and going. Could see her face and arms too, though I didn't get to see hands/fingers until later (didn't even find out she was a girl until later).
