Israel is a young project and there is still place for ideological development within it. I saw him saying that Israel is a lunatic society - it's an important statement. Fuentes is saying the same by the way - the issue is within Israeli society and not just a specific leader or party.
I understand Finklestein, he came from the ashkenazi core that is relatively pro peace and humanist. When you tell him about BDS he sees that in front of his eyes and thinks these people deserve no punishment for the actions of the religious right.
But he is an old man and perhaps only now becoming aware of how much that humanist demographic has lost power. A collective punishment is apt if only to show that old guard that everyone will get fucked if they don't take power away from the religious right once and for all and start a total cooperation with western goals.
