The casualties made it clear they couldn't win. Two years of crimes and they had no way to deal with it other than going in tunnels, and they didn't have the morale or bravery to endure that sort of fighting. So they lost. They failed to even come close to recruitment drives and keeping people from going AWOL in large numbers. Gideon's Chariot 1 ended up with running away after too may ambushes and Gideon's Chariot 2 was a half hearted failure from the start that couldn't get enough people to show up out of fear.
If they could finish the job, they would.

But even if I'm totally entirely wrong, that just means Hamas won the worldwide PR game despite jews sitting on a century of media monopoly and losing it by being complacent.
