The whole reason why it never happened during the cold war is because nukes have become extremely taboo to begin with, so using one willy-nilly in an offensive war for little gain would basically turn every single government against Russia, even China.
Russia wouldn't be invaded nor nuked, but they'll basically have to turn into an isolated hermit kingdom similar to North Korea, because nobody will want to deal with russians after that.

Soviet Union wanted to nuke China in 1969. They asked USA not to intervene, USA said something along the lines "if you nuke China, we will nuke you."
Chinese military doctorine at time was built around "there are too much of us to nuke us all".
Pretty sure in Kremlin there are several eager to use nuke, especially D.Medvedev. But that risks alienate China and India.

Breaking nuclear taboo offensively like that would set an incredibly bad precedent and it wouldn't even automatically win the war + crushing the Russian narrative that they just want to get rid of Nazi's which would hurt Russia's long-term project of reclaiming the post-Soviet sphere (or as much as they can manage).

I think especially China (which is Russia's daddy right now geopolitically) who have a no-first strike policy would get pissy if Russia started to fray away at the use of nukes like that and it becomes harder to engage with Russia neutrally.

So no, you will see Russia milk the threat for all its worth but I don't think they are desperate enough to try that. So far the war isn't going THAT bad and there's been this idea that it's a slow grind in their favor and maybe the west loses interest and they get their win. Risking to actually become a pariah rather than just one that gets detached from EU is a big deal.
