I was on the internet in 1996 and I remember it being full of websites that you could find and visit. They would publish whole books of websites and you could just type them in. But somewhere along the line they stopped promoting any individual websites and now the internet is only for the mega-corporations to fish for customers using brainwashing ads.

I heard one guy proposing a theory recently that they're purposefully making Google worse now in order to nudge more people into using AI instead of search engines. You're correct, but you forget that no one uses forum websites anymore because everyone wants to have access to a lot of people without having to create tons user profiles. It's why Discord exploded in popularity, effectively moving the majority of internet activity over there. As far as I'm aware, Google can't collect metadata from Discord, which has effectively ring fenced its reach. The only thing Google is good for now is reverse image search, but even that has been gimped because it limits searches of real people.
