How does Japan have so much more global influence despite having a smaller population and a smaller economy than other countries like China?

They are known for producing things that are well thought out, well produced by people who are paid well (compared to China, anyway), are polite to other cultures when abroad, are far nicer to tourists in their own country (when they are behaving themselves) and produce a vast amount of media that is pleasing to our Western tastes, which isn't surprising since it's an adaptation of our own media.

China has a history as a modern nation for only a few decades. Japan has been relatively modern since the late 1800's, and a world power as of the 30's.
