Air-to-air combat, ground attack, etc. The stuff they've been used for since the 80's + now greater focus on network-centric combat and interoperability with other assets in different domains (combined arms)
>Wont SAM batteries just blow them out of the sky as soon as they take off?
No, of course not.

the base models of the Gripen and most Russian planes are decades old, but there are new versions, like the Gripen E or Su-35S
depending on what kind of support they have (AEW&C aircraft for example) and what kind of missiles they carry (long range beyond visual range) they can both destroy each other
idk how the newest Gripens would measure up to the Su-57, I've read conflicting things about its stealth features

implying Ukraine even wanted to buy them from the US.
Ukraine received donated F-16s from Denmark and Netherlands and the US could've veto'd that, but didn't.
Ukraine also was offered F-18s by Australia but rejected that
you make it seem like the US under Biden somehow blocked there, that didn't happen.

It's different from the US stealth fighters. They are not as modular, although the trade-off is that Gripen doesn't have as good stealth capabilities.

how is the Gripen "modular" moreso than other fighters?
the F-35 for example can also be adapted to the user's needs, see the F-35I. the US just won't let anyone except Israel do that.

>trade-off not as good stealth
that's not a tradeoff that was made consciously, the Gripen is simply an older and less advanced design than the American stealth fighters.

like what? different weapons or external fuel tanks? or different radars or avionics? you can do all that with the F-35 too, the British ones will integrate the MBDA Meteor for example, Israeli ones have their own avionics, you can mount external fuel tanks too (those reduce stealth ofc).
the Gripen is just older and less advanced. it's still a good fighter, just not as good as the F-35.

you couldn't elaborate how the Gripen is more modular than the F-35 (because it isn't)
>it's very expensive to build
not moreso than older fighters like the Gripen, Rafale or Eurofighter, mostly because of economy of scale.
>and maintain, you need special facilities to maintain it
stealth is worth that, because it greatly increases its combat value

it's a more advanced fighter than the Gripen (or the Eurofighter or Rafale for that matter). it doesn't hurt your dignity to admit that.

Russian jets are absolutely flying. What they aren't doing is flying over contested Ukrainian territory, instead the Russians stick to their own air space and launch missiles at the Ukrainians.
The Russians don't have air dominance like America did in Iraq or Afghanistan but that doesn't mean that aircraft are suddenly useless.
