this sort of thing was common place before abrahamism ended it
in agrarian societies humans learn not to eat all the harvest, that some must be saved for replanting. This is why fertility gods and underworld gods are usually the same god in many different pagan systems. For prosperity, sacrifice must be made.
Likewise if a society is suffering, if its dwindling, if people are sick, a sacrifice must be made to renew it. Sacrifice people to recieve more, stronger, people. This is pagan logic. The only reason its startling to you is because you have abrahamic ideas so entrenched in your worldview that you think the idea of human sacrifice is horrific.
You are using an example of a group of people reverting to a way of existing their overall culture and society was trying to pull them out of, and ultimately succeeded and took you with them, as something ominous and nefarious against them. If you read the old testament you see its a constant struggle and they kept messing up many times. While they were doing this everyone elses ancestors were not even considering that there could be a problem with it in the first place.
