I did criminology at uni and it's the worst thing I've ever done. Spiralled after graduating because I couldn't get a job with it (obviously), and then lucked into a dev job a few years ago before all the AI shit cropped up

Pick a major that will earn you better money (and that you have some natural aptitude in) or drop out immediately. I'm serious, start walking towards the admin office right now and make your decision to change majors or drop out on the way, sociology will get you nowhere ESPECIALLY if you are straight, White, or male.

That would have been a pointless waste of time well before AI came along.
Pretty much every job that is based on mundane human intelligence is going to be replaced by AI in the next few years. Sociologist will no longer exist as a human job by the time you get your degree.
Just go get a job as a waiter or bartender or something like that. Those jobs will eventually get replaced too, but mechanical human labor getting replaced by robots is a few years behind computer based AI replacing humans doing things on computers.
Don't even bother trying to learn technical skills to try to stay ahead of the game, you won't be able to keep up because the rate of change is happening exponentially.
In the '70s and '80s, "computer operator" was a job because it took serious technical skills and knowledge just to use a computer. Then eventually everyone was able to operate a computer.
Then, "computer programmer" was a job, because it took technical skills and knowledge to program a computer. But now those human programmers are being replaced by Pajeets and AI.
So just become a "prompt engineer" and use technical skills and knowledge to tell the AI what to do. But now AI can successfully write prompts for other AI models better than human prompt engineers.
So learn n8n and start creating AI agents to help businesses operate, oh no wait the AI tools are getting so easy to use that any dumbass boomer can tell the AI what he wants it to do and create an AI agent.
The span of time for these kinds of things has gone from being able to create an entire career from having one kind of technical skills and knowledge, to decades to years, to months. You cannot learn whatever new cutting edge tech skill is the new thing to stay ahead of the curve. By the time you learn it well enough to do it, AI will have made your role obsolete.
