To those who blame the boomers
This is a piece of American culture you will never destroy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-447NaiBJs
I left Vicksburg Mississippi to San Francisco in 1967. I had just turned 16, was fed up with the south, fed up with the old ways, fed up the conformity so I said fuck school and hitchhiked out west. The free love, the drugs, the music, the optimism. Don't blame me, don't blame us.
If you were there you would have done it too. You blame the boomers but who is it that built the suburbs? It was the generation before us, even two before us as they were older. We are not responsible for car-centric cities. We even fought the interstates in SF which is why they have none.
If you were 16 in 1967, you would have left for San Francisco too. I still remember the beauty of the women, the joy in the air. We were poor young and dumb, but we were right.
American culture IS Hippie culture.
Your friend tells you he can take you to Dallas, last call... You're not saying no. Saying yes changed my life. I was a hippie, and we're still here. Yes many of us are still here.
We weren't understood then and we aren't understood now. But what we did changed the world.
