But it comes down to exposure time, i can tan but allways get red before.
Most if not all europeans when they start getting exposed to sun will have some degree of skin inflamation, the melanin takes some time to ramp up in production untill you get the bronze / gold skin
North africans and arabs get less of the inflamation and their skin responds faster, as well as the melanin oxidises more rapidly, within a few hours, which allows them to fully tan in virtualy a few days and get a deeper brown color

I damaged my skin in the sun, and now it's permanently damaged. No creams have helped, and it's been over five years. It's simply become dry and lifeless. If I don't apply cream, it's because my skin has stopped working properly and producing oil, causing dermatitis.

Be careful with tanning.

I burn every summer, shed skin then get a tan eventually.

Look at naked older women. Their upper chest, their arms, they always look way more fucked than their belly or butt. Yes, I know that women have thinner skin than men, but still.

On the other side by father looks still OK even though he is tanned from working in the garden a lot.

It's not that I've been forcing myself, it was just inevitable, summers here are scorching.
Unless you put factor 50 sunscreen every single time you go out, you're going to get burnt in one afternoon.

i'm very pale skinned so when i try to tan i just become pink, shed skin, and then go back to being pale.

I've never had a tan in my life. My dad is English but my mother is eastern Euro and has olive skin I sometimes wonder how I'd look if I actually went outside in the summer.
