Every slave wanted freedom. Literally every one of them. This is what he writes about early on. They were crying when white men came to the plantations and told them they were free after the war. However it was immediately followed by fear and a sense of loss. They didn't know what to do or where to go. Some of the slaves were old and were conflicted since they had no skills and no time to learn.
