i have a 4090 in my PC. i was playing around with llama2 13b finetunes years ago with it, which is what made me realize that i need more power. nowadays for poor people, the major limiting factor is RAM rather than VRAM due to mixture of expert models. basically models with complex parts that can be both really smart and fast when spread across RAM and VRAM. you just need a lot of really fast RAM. back in my day, 13bs were the best i could do with a 4090. now, we can pretty easily do models over 100B on a 4090 with pretty decent speeds and quality
