Doesn't anyone remember?
30 years ago this book came out. The thinkers have been talking about not enough jobs for people because of tech for decades and in earnest starting about 30 years ago. That's why we have tests of Guaranteed Income. 70% of the U.S. economy is spending. If there are no jobs there is no money to spend. So we have to lower costs which means free single-payer healthcare, free education, and a base income so people have a place to sleep, can eat, clothe themselves and do not have incentive to do crime because they're desperate. The rich will have to pay for it - but they'll still be rich after all that.

People have been claiming technological advancements will lead to widespread unemployment for literal centuries.
>b-but THIS time it's different
It's fallacious. Consumption rises more or less 1:1 with productivity. The nature of work changes, but work is not eliminated. There is no reason to think it will be any different going forward.

Marx already declared the end of work in the 19th century.

The humorously rich part about universal basic income is going to be the slow, step-by-step implementation of it, and how poor people or the unemployed won't have access to it for years.

First (This will last for about 8-10 years) the only ones able to access UBI are people whose jobs were decidedly replaced by AI. People are going to have to prove via W2s that their line of work is included in a government-mandated checklist of AI-interfered jobs/fields or that AI has replaced beyond a certain percentage.

So who are the people that will immediately be able to access UBI, and which are the roles that are first to go? Lets see:

>Data/Administrative roles
>Customer service
>Creative/Content
>Entry level accounting/bookkeeping
>Receptionists

So, this mainly means the women in the workforce who were basically already useless and provide no real value, but enjoy a moderate, livable wage. Think office mommies and Girlbosses who are currently making anywhere from $50k-$120k who literally do nothing and get paid for it. For the most part, these will be the only ones able to qualify and get access to UBI for like a decade.

If you're blue collar, a service worker, fast food cook, delivery driver or just general wageslave, poor etc, you'll have to continue slaving it, no UBI for you, because your job will not be officially marked as "replaced by AI".

and post WWII to about 1979 wage gains closely matched productivity gains thus the middle class was formed and a single worker could buy a house, a car, support a wife and 2 kids and take vacations and have savings. Trillions in wealth has been stolen from the bottom 80% since 1979.
