Even if you want to look at the issue from a totally secular, atheistic perspective, humans are clearly predisposed to religious thinking and will invent something like one over time when left to their own devices. A lot of those "religiously unaffiliated" people probably describe themselves as something like "spiritual, but not religious"; the decrease in self-identification with established religions is probably more due to how their organization / operation / theology are poorly adapted to modernity, rather than that everyone are becoming fedora tippers en masse
